Pavarotti couldn't hold a candle to Domingo.Domingo has better legato and much better mezza voce(Pavarotti's soft singing was breathy crooning). As a musician he's miles ahead Pavarotti he phrases much better,he sings with more passion and style and he changes the timbre of his voice according to role demands Pavarotti always sounds the same no matter what he sings.

The quality of his voice is also amazing it's round warm and even from top to bottom the range covers almost three octaves (C3-B5).Pavarotti had a metallic voice with an edge lacking roundness of tone below middle E his voice was inaudible and his passagio was tight.Domingo is a completed artist he has a great voice,he's a great interpreter actor and pianist.Pavarotti's was born with a beautiful voice big deal!

ok ... first of all I really don't understand why everyone has to compare Pavarotti to Domingo ... they are both two of the greatest tenors to ever produce a note. Pavarotti was an amazing singer and the only reason people feel the need to put him down is because they themselves are talentless fools who which they had the vocal ability of that wonderful man! They are both great performers and people need to appreciate what both have done for the tenor repertoire they have performed!

He has vocal cords of steel, which is fortunate, as they were able to withstand such abuse in the higher registers. He does have a wobble now actually, this is confirmed by several live recordings. Domingo's legato is mediocre compared to Pavarotti's, and no matter how good he is at piano, it doesn't change the fact that he is and was a second rate tenor.

His phrasing in Italian, just like his diction, doesn't come close to Pavarotti's. The young Pavarotti could accomplish softer singing much more affectively than Domingo.

Pavarotti's mezza voce was always a breath and unsupported falsetto.

.Domingo's legato is much better than Pavarotti's for example he can maintain the volume of a phrase and articulate very smoothly even if he's singing a passagio or a very low note. Pavarotti's passagio area was always louder than the middle register and his low notes were hollow in comparison.

Domingo sings in 6 languages Pavarotti sang only in his native language.Domingo's diction is clear his consonants are not as crisp as Pavarotti's but he makes no modification of vowels in the passagio and high notes Pavarotti on the other hand always did.
Domingo's fraseggio ...( 2 days ago by quis178)
Domingo's fraseggio is much better than Pavarotti's.He also sings with vocal colors darkening or lightening the timbre of his voice according to role demands for example in Dio mi potevi his voice is very profound and dramatic in Di tu se fedele his voice is lyric and light.Pavarotti used the same vocal color whether he sang Radames or Neronimo.

Domingo's cords are not made of steel as the Pav fans claim , when he debuted Lohengrin at the age of 27 he damaged his voice thus he dropped it and sang it again after 15 years (he wrote this in his memoir).

Although he was not a high notes tenor par excellence like Gedda or Kraus his high notes ring beautifully up to the B-flat and his high B was decent. His musicallity is much better than Pavarotti who could hardly read a score and his inerpretations lack the intensity and passion of Domingo.

Placido is a superb OVERALL performer and praised by great singers such us Tebaldi,Callas,Nilsson,Sills and Caballe not only for his voice but also stage presence and musicality(Nilsson also praised his high notes). His voice is still in excellent condintion after 45 years of singing a vast and demanding repertoire.

You are very wrong, Pavarotti was capable of very effective mezza voce when he was younger, he could decrescendo high notes that Domingo could only dream of doing. His mezza voce became sloppy when he got older, but I don't judge Pavarotti by his older, sloppier singing (as you so desperately try to do).

Pavarotti actually sang in French too, not very well, but he did sing in French. I don't really care how many languages Domingo sang in, or how many roles he did to be honest, I prefer a tenor who drives for perfection in one language and in a select amount of roles, rather than sing 131 roles imperfectly.

You are spouting garbage out of your mouth if you say Pavarotti's modification of vowels on high notes was more extreme than Domingo's. Take a listen to Domingo's (shouted) high B on the E vowel here, then go over to the 1977 Pavarotti version, even you couldn't say that Pavarotti's high B sounds less like the E vowel in Vincero.
Pavarotti's legato ...( 2 days ago by Mooorhe)
Pavarotti's legato was flawless, his breath control was so incredible that he could sing the phrases smoothly without any breaks. His registers all connected perfectly, as Caballe stated 'from the top to the bottom, it was a line of equality, of beauty'. Pavarotti had no trouble singing in the passagio, and Domingo's low notes were naturally stronger because his voice was intended for different repertoire (Domingo never respected this of course and butchered roles such as the Duke).

I don't think his B was decent, his B-flat was rather hit and miss as well. It depends on the role, you cannot just generalise about a singer's interpretations, they differ from role to role. I think Pavarotti had far better interpretations of some roles, and Domingo better interpretations of others. I'd take Domingo's Calaf interpretation over Pavarotti's, but I would take Pavarotti's Duke over Domingo's. I prefer Tucker's interpretations of heavier roles far more than Domingo's though.

I really don't know why everyone tries to find a better opera singer. It is like trying to compare which fingerprint is better. They have different voices and depending on the role, an specific voice fits better than the other and vieversa.! Have a nice day!

His techique of achieving mezza voce was faulty from the begining and got worse through the years.Early on he had good messa di voce.Domingo had the ability to do diminuendi (I heard him doing it in a performance of Turandot with Freni) but he didn't sing it because it's required very rarely.Usually tenors perform messa di voce when they can not hit a high note piano(it's more easy to hit a high note in full voice and then make a dimminuendo than hiting it in mezza voce).
