Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity

Uploaded by: ChallengingMedia
Video Description:
http://www.mediaed.org
While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century.
In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity.
This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

"the tough guise is attractive to men in part, because they see many girls and women validating it" - a word for word quote.
why do they validate it?

Solid point -- and ... ( 2 weeks ago by Br0nze)
Solid point -- and it is very much on a societal scale. Almost universally the notion of a 'gay man' clashes with a 'man's man.' There is a fine line -- a metro-sexual, but that's just more politically correct bull.
In any case, from society we hear all the time: women want a man's man. A man who is in control, who is cool, collected, respected and has status in society. And society also shows us a way to achieve said status: by beating out other guys (in a job, in money, in muscle size...)

This video is fantastic! Education is the key! Many people are anti-intellectuals but with men like this educating and being role models for us and standing up for women...maybe other men can follow his lead! Keep up the great work Jackson!! :)
Dogs can be trained ... ( 2 weeks ago by CAVEAMERICA)
Dogs can be trained to be either aggressive or friendly. In society if a domesticated dog displays violence and aggression and attacks someone, the dog is put to sleep. Same goes with people in our society, if a person displays aggressive or violent behavior and attacks and harms another person they get locked up.
Violent men are a threat to society and therefore should be educated to be friendly. Dogs can learn to shake. If a dog can do it..you can do it. I'm a man and I approve this message!
You confuse ... ( 2 weeks ago by Plato86)
You confuse agression with violence. One can be agressive without harming others or ourselves. We can be agressive in achieving our goals and dreams and not have to hurt anybody.Men are not dogs nor machines and to deny our natural passions is to deny our humanity. You sure you are a man because you speak like a woman.;)

Bro. You call me a woman because I believe that woman should not be beaten and abused? I agree that one should be aggressive with goals and dreams, but we're not discussing goals and dreams here, we're here to say that beating up a woman is unacceptable and doesn't make one a man. Don't you have a mom or a grandma or a sister that you love? Are you "aggressive" towards them? There is a proper place for aggression, like on the football field, but aggression towards a woman is violence! Peace!

i agree with this guy, but if you truly wish to experience first-hand the kind of attitude that most men have, get a job as a bouncer. I'm a bouncer for a living, i'm in at least one fight a week (not like you see on UFC or WWE, but real, sending people to the hospital and sometimes jail kind of fights. It all stems from the male attitude of "never admit to being wrong".

Oh my God I would never justify beating up anybody let alone a woman. The sociologist in the film were talking about aggression in a larger context than violence against women.I don't see anything wrong with the "tough guise" it is natural.

I'll admit that alot of guys get into the business because they want to be percieved as tough, and yes the assholes do outnumber those of us who take our job seriously. Personally I'd rather solve the situation with as little trouble as possible, but explaining to a drunk the reason he has to leave is often like talking to a brick that believes it was right for slapping someone or throwing a beer bottle at someone, and that you are wrong for making them follow the rules.

You construct a complete stereotype about feminists. Many feminists defend men against negative stereotypes. Watch the film by Jean Kilbourne; she states on several occasions that she does not want media stereotyping men in negative ways. You have bunched all feminists into the same category and then smeared them with the same negative view.

No. What I am really saying cannot be explained in the 500 words YouTube gives you to comment with.
Anyway, to the question of why they validate it: because in our society it is rewarded to do so. And people like to be rewarded, and people like meeting the expectations of other people and pleasing the majority.
I am saying that we are presented with the incorrect ways of getting to be in control and getting respect. We confuse respect with fear and interchange it freely.
