I agree, it's easy to mess up that line especially if you are trying to sing. I play it all the time but it's hard to get through the whole song. hHen TM Stevens covered it, he changed the bass line cause he said "there's only one Larry Graham". When Stanley Clarke covered it, he also changed the bassline.

But you have to realize that most people, even today, don't realize what it takes to create a composition even comparable to the ones he created, so they don't respect them like they should. Look at a lot of classical composer's lives all the way down to how people disrespect Larry and say he is talentless. So you really can't expect much from the people who don't GET it.

At a time when Stanley Clarke and Jaco was gaining respect,everyone studied Jaco but I was into Graham. All the Jazz Cats were not as impressed with Larry as they were with Jaco. Someone heard me playing and gave me the nickname 2-FUNKI.I joined a very popular band and was working a lot.I thank him for this style!!! Respect for what Larry created has to be realized by the contribution he has made to Bassists all over the world. You are not a complete bassist if you don't THUMP the FUNK!!!

I used to learn practice licks by marcus miller and stanley but i didn't get really funky unitl I discovered Graham. After playing Graham licks those Stanley and Marcus licks started to sound better! His licks may sound simple compared to other slappers...but try playing "release yourself" and singing it at the same time!
