Cash - an original genius. Cohen - an original genius. Cave - an unoriginal, uncreative parser of other people's originality only to be regarded by the hipster establishment who doesn't know any better.

You think? What is it you see as unoriginal and uncreative in Cave?
What makes Cash and ... ( 4 days ago by IzzyIsou)
What makes Cash and Cohen great is that many times they're pouring their self into their songs. Cave does not. Why? Because his songs - just like his persona - are a pose: the "pose" of the feeling singer-songwriter. Cash and Cohen were NOT posing; they were and are (in Cohens case) the real thing.
I DO NOT believe any of Caves lines. He is a poser.
Well, I can only ... ( 4 days ago by GrantsWatching)
Well, I can only evaluate the material based on what I see in the material -- not the performer's intentions. It's a mode of criticism that relates back to the idea of intentional fallacy (be it a song or prose work). The idea that is that the material is cut off from the performer, therefore the material cannot be judged on what the artist wants it to be, despite 'authenticity' or 'posing.'
You might be interested in reading up on new criticism. And I don't mean that sarcastically.
Intentional Fallacy ... ( 4 days ago by IzzyIsou)
Intentional Fallacy is from the New Criticism days, theres nothing new about that. In fact, its quite dated.
If I want meta-fiction Ill read post-modern fiction; but if I want good songwriting Ill go to Cash, Cohen, Waits, Porter, Gershwin, et al. A good song communicates something that is essential and real for the writer and performer. Mr. Cave never delivers the goods. He is, to use an old metaphor, the map of the territory but he is not the territory.

"Intentional Fallacy is from the New Criticism days, theres nothing new about that. In fact, its quite dated."
-- Indeed, I. fallacy dates back to New Criticism, but it's still a major part of deconstruction and the post-structural movement. Nothing dated about it. It has major significance to the point you're arguing, in fact.
"A good song communicates something that is essential and real for the... performer."
-- That's romantic, but the final product is all that matters.

"if I want good songwriting Ill go to Cash, Cohen, Waits, Porter, Gershwin, et al."
-- But that does raise a question. Why are you here? I don't mean that in a dickish way, really. I'm just surprised someone who dislikes Cave is bothering to visit one of his YouTube videos, especially more than once. (I saw your previous posts). If you don't dig the music, why subject yourself to it?

Right. Have you ... ( 3 days ago by Hirnlego999)
Right. Have you listened to some of the Birthday party material, the Boatman's Call, live seeds, songs like Saint Huck live? I think you have not really explored Cave at all.
And, when it comes to singing he is generally much more into the song, much more energy and involvement than both Cohen and Cash who sometimes seem to have taken valium before performing. In Cohens latest album he barely bothers to sing, leaves it to others even. Cashs mercy seat sounds like he didn't read the lyrics even
Having said that, ... ( 3 days ago by Hirnlego999)
Having said that, I'm still a fan of Cohen but I despise the poor use of silly sounding synths. Or that piss poor album D'o ladies man.
Cash, I only like few songs. Many songs repeat the same rhythm pattern, there is not much diversity and country is pretty much a music style that lacks innovation and variation.
Can you name any song by Cohen where he puts energy into the singing as Cave does in Do you love me? Sorry, but I do not hear it. Do not believe "far from me"? Your system is broke.

"Can you name any song by Cohen where he puts energy into the singing as Cave does...?"
- In terms of energy, I thought Cohen was at his strongest with "Story of the Street" and "Memories." But generally, no. Lenny keeps the energy level pretty low. Ever listen to the final 20 seconds of "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong"? He lets out the strangest little scream. It seems almost out of character.
So you seem to be ... ( 10 hours ago by pjvenneman)
So you seem to be arguing Cave's honesty... Cash was one of the most conflicted and contradictory performers around. Your argument sems to be an emotional one. The fact is Johnny Cash & Leonard Cohen have both stated they are huge fans of Nick Cave. Musically & lyrically Cave is head and shoulders above Cash & Cohen. And he also wouldn't exist without Cash doing what he did first. Cave is a screenwriter, novelist, poet... And he has lived many lives if you learn a bit about his past.
Aw -- Tom Waits ... ( 13 minutes ago by GrantsWatching)
Aw -- Tom Waits does do a fantastic job of presenting a strange, strange vision. (Just picked up Swordfishtrombones and Frank's Wild Years, actually). Realistically, Cave, Cash, Cohen and Waits are the four performers I go to most often.
Until Miley Cyrus really breaks out, of course. (lol)
