The Bible was actually written what? 200 years after Jesus died, by the Romans after lengthy debates on what to include in the final version. Also if you read the Gospels they contradict each other repeatedly. *sigh* why isn't the God delusion mandatory in religious studies?

Most people don't need a book to tell them how to live. Morals come about as a necessary survival technique for staying protected by others in dire situations. Although The Bible is full of good points too many people use it for as a tool to repress others who do not share their views. Also given the state of modern politics any nuclear war would likely be brought about by religion (Or, sadly, pursuit of diminishing natural resources).

Morals are not merely a survival technique. Why did Ghandi starve himself? Why do people volunteer for the peace corps for no pay? Why do people donate to charity? Why did I find a wallet in the street and contact the owner to return it to him when keeping the money inside would have helped me survive? Our moral compass is a divine gift beyond explanation.

They WERE born at the EARLIEST, 60 years after he died. Even the church acknowledges this although they say that it is an "accounting" of eyewitness events written well after the fact. Since there is no evidence of his miracles, of anyone having first hand contact with him, fishing with him or any of the things that you mentioned. Only the bible says this. You can't verify a book with the writings of that same book. Maybe harry Potter is real, Harry potter says he is!

The bible has too many evil things in it to be left as the tome of moral instruction to our descendants. Rape, pillaging, murder, senseless punishment(death for sassin' your mother?!?), the sex trade, and slavery are all condoned in the bible. In fact it contains detailed instructions on how to do it. It teaches jealousy, divisiveness, hatred, and sometimes love. Why not cut out the fat and teach just love? That is what most modern Atheists want. Morality without hypocrisy, harm and guilt.

So if some of the word of "god" can be dismissed as the flaws of men,why is it not plausible that the rest of it was from man as well? If the bible is not a reliable source of the word of god then what reason is there left to believe? None.
Rules that HE laid out not given by him? Give me a way to tell what WAS written by him.Picking and choosing based on what YOU think is nice and throwing out the rest is a kind of blind adherence to an ideal("god")that you are fully aware may not be real
