"evidence" of ... ( 5 days ago by MagnesDrachen13)
"evidence" of comedy? that's asinine. He's claiming that which can't be proven one way or the other. Comedy is subjective. He claims one thing, others claim something different. The fact is, neither side can be proven, it's an OPINION.
what he is saying ... ( 5 days ago by archstan8)
what he is saying is just common knowledge. duh. forget about contemporary comics, most of which, men and women, aren't funny. just confine yourself to the people in your life. can anyone honestly claim that they know more funny women than men? i doubt it. perhaps women have by and large a better sense of humor than men, but what hitchens argues is totally uncontroversial. it's like saying black basketball players are better than white players, which is just plain true.

ive been saying that women arent funny for years!!! (just kidding...)
hes one of the smartest people ive ever heard speak, articulate, etc... but i think he may be over-stepping his boundries here.. i mean.. hes certainly NOT an authority on whats funny... that being said, there is something that rings true with what he says.. in courtship or like, social situations etc ive always found that its up to the man to entertain the woman with humor etc... tough call...
there are some ... ( 4 days ago by katkal3)
there are some authentically really funny women out there, like wanda sykes and lisa lampanell, but most are pretty shitty. and its hugely because their routine is always about relationships.how boring.

Christopher Hitchens once again destroys anyone with his absolute logic, which many can find overbearing at times, but nonetheless is often too true.

i dont think he's overstepping his boundaries bc he's backing his story up with a type of evidence that any of us who've been to a bar can attest to. hitchens is spot on. nothing new there. and he's confident, not cocky

Women aren't funny, and I don't need Christopher Hitchens to tell me this.

Women aren't funny. Period.
This is funny. Oh, ... ( 1 day ago by frailegio)
This is funny. Oh, Magnes, Magnes. You are really commiting a disservice to all womankind. The subject is not "what" makes something funny, but the fact (and Hitchens presents evidence for this) that there is a distinction between the need that both genders have of developing a comedic skill and that this is tied to the social and mating rituals that have evolved over our specie's existence. Your reply should compel Hitchens to write his article on how some women apparently can't even read.
But he's ... ( 1 day ago by MagnesDrachen13)
But he's fundamentally wrong. Saying that women naturally don't NEED to be funny is flawed, it's a trait whose significance is up to the individual. Making a broad generalization about nature and ALL women is false and over reaching, as much of Hitchens' writings tend to be.
I see, your one of ... ( 1 day ago by frailegio)
I see, your one of those (and I am generalizing) who think that it is bad to generalize. Well, for this argument is serves to generalize. For example, in MOST cases it is the man who pursues a woman to begin a social interaction. MOST women are turned off by the sleaze bag. MOST women react positively to a guy who is funny and witty (including the bull dike that Hitchens refers to). MOST men will try to be funny to increase their chances of success. Women need not worry to be funny for success.
So, is he ... ( 1 day ago by frailegio)
So, is he fundamentally wrong? I don't think so. Is he attributing qualities to individuals who don't deserve them? Yes, since there are many men who aren't funny. At all. But don't misconstrue his argument to be a critique of a person's sense of humor since many people will laugh at a joke and our senses respond to stimuli. What he is getting at is the necessity that the male gender shares to provide the stimuli necessary to get the girls attention to make the interaction possible: Reproduction
Yes he's ... ( 1 day ago by MagnesDrachen13)
Yes he's fundamentally wrong. Sense of humor can work just as well as an attractor to either sex, it's all up to the individual. This is a gross generalization, regardless of what the "point" is supposed to be.
Women are ... ( 1 day ago by aerialpc)
Women are definitely not funny. No offense, no insult there. No woman ever made me laugh. I mean even in "Fucking Matt Damon", I only laughed when he appeared.
And I'm not gay.
