I love 'Sitting by the Window!' Saw Robert Plant do a cover of it in Detroit 2002, which was great too.

I used to work in downtown San Jose, Ca. There had always been this whacked-out homeless guy who hung out in the park across the street. You couldn't even see his face for all his long gray hair. He didn't bother anybody. A co-worker said "you know who that is"? He said "That's Skip Spence of the Moby Grape". At the time, I had no idea who Moby Grape was. He died a few months later. Turns out he wasn't homeless at all. He even had money. He was just nuts. Funny thing is, now I love his music.

Nuts he was! It was incredible to watch him perform with Moby Grape! One time a friend and I were at the Fillmore in SF in '67. Spence was just grinning and grinning like the whole thing was just 'too much!' My friend said "I wish I was on What he's ON!!!"

Robert Plant was a huge Moby Grape fan when Jimmy Page found him much to his chagrin!

I commented about a year ago, but do so again to second what Antarblue posted. Skippy was a dynamo on stage and so much fun to watch. The night I saw them (in Santa Clara in 1967) they were ON and just fantastic sounding. See the Wikipedia entry for Moby Grape which I contributed to (because I love this band so much) for a good history including what happened to Spence.

Plant was also reportedly a huge Small Faces fan. Everyone thought highly of Marriott though at that time i suppose.

Anybody heard of a band called Joy Of cooking who opened for the rest of Big Brother after Janis died? They were so great that I bought their record on the way out the door: The Holding Company sucked.

This is precisely what's wrong with the CD and radio industry today. All the "chart toppers" get CD releases and airplay, while brilliant bands like Moby Grape, The Fugs et al are left by the wayside to be forgotten. Damn shame. Thank G-d for YouTube.

Being from the tail end of the babyboom I remember the name Moby Grape and have been sampling them on this web site.
I know that mostly their fans will watch this vid and see this posting but I have to say that this band takes itself much too seriously.
The pseudo-intellect hippiness that this weak sound tries to project is cliché and a bore.
Sorry if that offends but it now explains why they were used in Beavis and Butthead as a favorite band of the hippy teacher Mr. Van Drissen.

...oh yes, the sounds of 'The Grape' bouncing off the walls at the Fillmore & Winterland. Great times :>) Then there was the time at Lake Tahoe; while MG was playing, S Spence broke, came down off stage, layed down on the floor w/ us, & helped us finish up some reefer...lol, then casually went back up & continued playing...cracked us up!
The Peter Lewis ... ( 1 month ago by Poehr)
The Peter Lewis song drags a bit, but "Hey Grandma" is a total rush! Great to see Skip so alive and pumped! I'm not sure Moby Grape were the epochal band that some people think they were, but when they were good they were very very good. This is a great bit of footage.
One fantastic, ... ( 2 weeks ago by Pastpickerpresent)
One fantastic, talented, and creative band, with a fraternal comradery, from " The Mystical Era".
The energy that exsudes from their first record is ledgendary among liked minded musicians from the times...
Jerry's Guitar, Bob's voice and bass playing, Don's drumming, Skip's energy, and Peter's voice and musicality. All together with their collective arrangement , A collective great thing !
Too bad the Management and record company blew it!

I am not a Deadhead. But now that I see this vid again - thanks your reply - I can honestly say that I have never seen a more self-absorbed and self-important group of bores play guitars.
This stuff is dull and very weak.
Just listen to the arrogance in the voice of the presenter who mentions a "song for all ages." LOL!!! If they do say so themselves!

Yes, these men bridge not only the generation gap, but the geography gap?
What is a "geography gap?" Do they make it easier to cross geographic gaps? LMFAO!!!
Yes, these were men with a deep and sincere mission! Closing geographic gap - like bridging the Grand Canyon - was a thing they were born to do.
Ah, the misunderstood prophets....

Self important bores on guitars,eh how about The Eagles? We can all agree they suck, right?
True, The Eagles ... ( 6 days ago by Arkady63)
True, The Eagles have made being full of one's self an art form. But at least they waited to sell a few records first.
And single handedly bridging the generation and "geography" gaps? Good lord, Jesus himself would've been proud.
Listen, I mean no offense to anyone who's a fan of Moby Grape. But this whole deep-sense-of-purpose thing they had going is kind of silly to me.
And calling themselves wonderful before anyone else did besides maybe their girlfriends or mothers is dull.

Has anyone ever scene the movie "The Sweet Ride." There's a scene where the Grape perform at this club in Malibu and their performance is off the hook. Loved it.
