We will never know how many American lives Carlos Hathcock saved with his extraordinary service to our country. Rest in peace and many thanks, Marine.

He was burned badly saving several other soldiers heading home. He was removed sent Stateside and had a long painful recovery. The Scar Tissue was extensive. He taught for a while and would be found prostrate on the Firing Range where the Scar Tissue bleed through. He was forced to retire. Read One Shot One Kill, it's spellbinding. He took up Shark Fishing late in life.

When you take a life, regardless of the circumstances, it changes you. What Carlos Hathcock did was remarkable beyond words. There can never be enough credit, medals or recognition for the skill, courageous sprite or valorous deeds this man accomplished. - I want to thank everyone for remembering and recognizing his contributions.

@FrozenEMT I AGREE YOU CAN SEE IT IN HIS EYES.CARLOS WAS A BRIGHT STAR IN A DARK WAR.CARLOS HAD HUNT'IN INGRAINED IN HIM FROM A EARLY AGE---1940'S AND 50'S RURAL ARKANSAS MADE HIM TOUGH.

well, and not socialize when they are not on duty...that they want to eat alone, sleep by themselves away from their unit, etc. Regardless of the answer to that question, there is not a Marine sniper that has ever touched brass since Gunny Hathcock that doesnt owe him a debt of gratitude. After all, he talks about being the one who developed the concept and workings of using a .50cal for sniping which has changed the face of warfare. Hell, because of him, new ammunitions were developed.

Did Gunny Hathcock ever compete or shoot again after his VietNam experience. There is no question that what he did saved countless lives and that he is a hero and one of the best if not the best sniper that ever touched brass. But I cant get around the fact that listening to him talk it seems that it took a mental and emotional toll on him. Ive also seen this same thing in interviews with other snipers. Of course Ive heard that snipers who are on active duty tend to want to stay to themselves as

Hathcock was a true American hero in every sense.

The way i see it, we (the US) lost a national treasure when Carlos passed away. Along with a treasure trove of strories and information. I know Carlos never asked for an award, neither did a lot of people but he still deserves the honor. He was one of them rare people who had a natural gift, to do what he did with so much effect and accuracy, I read somewhere that some numbers expert estimated that through his actions, that Carlos may have saved as many as 10,000 military lives. Just Amazing.

  15. Jan 16, 2010 at 07:08 AM by Marine052191

Ah, I see your point. Keep up the fight, maybe someone with a open mind instead of a close minded senator. Its only a matter of time. SEMPER FI!

  16. Jan 16, 2010 at 05:41 AM by remowil55

@Marine052191 Although i agree with you, That is not the point. Carlos earned and deserves the Medal of Honor. President Clinton awarded him the Silver Star for the APC incident where he saved 7 fellow marines from burning to death. But to me that was not enough. I have been trying to get some lame ass Senator to work on this but it has fallen on death ears. But i will keep trying.

If there was a church devoted to Carlos Hathcock, I would be a member.

People like Apache, the frenchman and the seemingly invincible junkie that Carlos talks about in his book reconfirm my stance on the death penalty.
