CAT BORDHI - Intro To Moebius Knitting

  1. Mar 12, 2010 at 08:59 AM by SageSFO

Thanks Cat - I am a rookie knitter and I am so excited about knitting moebius neck warmers...this is a great start and I WILL be buying the books!

Thank you. I am really quite amazed that you still take the time to reply to us. I've already completed one moebius scarf, I just want to make one smaller. Thank you so very much for sharing with us. This video is what inspired me to return to knitting. So I could say "it's all your fault" that I spend so much time knitting rather than chasing dust bunnies around the house. thank you again.

So long as the circumference of the loop you are making is at least 30 inches, it will be fine.

Will a 60 inch cable be too big? Do I need to buy a 47"?

Ahah! Next time I have a cold I shall take your good advice. Thanks for a delightful post.

This is a *very* good introduction into moebius knitting, thank you! Even with a head cold I managed to cast on without a hitch and knit myself a nice neck warmer. Quite the cure for the common cold, if I do say so myself! ;)

    Exactly.

Does this mean if the pattern calls for 90 stitches cast on, you actually cast on 180, but only count the ones on the needle?

Lovely instructions. It's a shame there is no information regarding the number of stitches, but understandable, since there's a book by the author. The cast-on is easy, once you pick up the rhythm. One way to check oneself on the cast on is to pay attention to the first row - one stitch "wants" to be knitted in front, and the other one - in back, Thanks.

That was the most comprehensive lesson. Thank you. Btw what kind of yarn are you using in this. It's GORGEOUS.

Thak you Cat , I finally understand how to knit a moebius !!

    That was awesome!

This seems fabulous, I can't wait to make one. What yarn are you using, it's so pretty.

Hi Cat! I am very intrested in this technique! I have been reading things on your page and watching the video and am anxious to try! What size needle did you use for this project? Wish me luck!

Just finished my very first Moebius scarf....created with your help...thank you...I used thick natural wool and it came out absolutely fantastic. Your instructions are easy (and clear) to follow and I enjoy your voice....and of course, your knowledge. Thank you again....starting on number two...

Thanks again Cat - you've been so very helpful! And yes, I think you're right... two twists would be more awkward AND not nearly as fun/magical as knitting a moebius -- Diana

  18. Dec 21, 2009 at 08:05 PM by catbordhi

Yes, that is correct. But I wouldn't do it - two twists in a scarf is awkward. Also, there is no mirror symmetry as happens with any Moebius. -- Cat

Thank you Cathy! So just to clarify - to get 2 twists I would cast on regularly (say cable cast on) and twist my stitches 180 degrees? Wow! I've never left stitches twisted to find out! Another reminder about all the interesting things that are just around the corner with knitting!

A Moebius always has an odd number of half-turns so you cannot ever have one with 2 twists. To get a 2-twist loop, merely cast on and twist the cast-on. It will give you an even number of half-turns or twists. It will also ALWAYS have 2 edges and 2 surfaces, while a Moebius will ALWAYS have 1 edge and 1 surface.

Excellent video and very helpful! You saved us in our crunch to complete a Christmas gift!.. Is there any way to put two twists into the scarf (i.e., one for front and one for back?) Many thanks!

  22. Dec 21, 2009 at 12:06 PM by catbordhi

It all depends on the kind of pattern . . . but yes, you can start right away. Be ready for lots of surprises and fun. The Moebius is the ultimate knitter's playmate, and always has a twinkle in its eye as it shows you new tricks.

  23. Dec 21, 2009 at 11:34 AM by ShornSheepStudio

You have me hooked! Can one start right off with a pattern on the first row, or must it be a sort of "set up" row?

I saw a scarf using your method. It was sooooo nice. I just have to make one myself. Thanks so much for the video. I'm a very experienced knitter, but I would have never thought that a mobeus was done this way.
