Symphony of Science - 'We Are All Connected' (ft. Sagan, Feynman, degrasse Tyson & Bill Nye)
Carl Sagan - 'A Glorious Dawn' ft Stephen Hawking (Symphony of Science)
Love you Carl! :)
i straight got teary =(
@nielsjoklein God gives no answers. All beliefs are built on faith/axioms, and they are all therefore equally arbitrary whether they invoke a deity or not. At least with empiricism we have something which we apparently can all agree on because nearly everyone employ's the active assumptions that 1+1=2 and that the senses usually don't lie. Ergo logic and senses are universally accepted whereas supernatural superstitions lack any such homogeneity.
We are completely insignificant
relevant verification is always arbitrary... but yes you are right... it is true...
Best youtube video ever. so true...
I think awareness is just an evolutionary development for the organism to survive and respond to the environment. Self-awareness is another level of abstraction for survival of our body that comes with language and thought. Of course, on a deeper level, that sense of separation is a delusion. "We are all connected to each other, biologically to the earth, chemically to the rest of the universe, atomically" -- Neil deGrasse Tyson But Carl said it even better: "The cosmos is within us."
Since destructiveness and constructiveness go hand in hand in consciousness, apparently it doesn't matter what the experience is, as long as it can be experienced. So is pain and suffering just a by-product of this desire to be aware? What do you think?
Adding names and concepts like "god" aren't even necessary. 'God' is just a name we use for this wondrous mystery and natural law by which everything functions. The ground of our being is the very ground of all being and we are THAT!! become AWAKE! -- which seems pretty profound to me. From one bit of awakened stardust to another . . . -- enjoy the dance.
Huston Smith, a well known professor of comparative religion said, "The polytheist says there are many gods. The monotheist says there is one God. The mystic says, "ONLY GOD!" I like that comment very much, but ultimately, I think Nature and the Cosmos are an integral whole of which we are all part, and at the most fundamental level, as humans, we really are this cosmos become AWAKE.
OK, that's a way of dealing with it. But since God doesn't exist, absolute truth also doesn't exist. So that makes your statement nothing more than an opinion and not an exclamation of truth. And since opinions can be false, and there is no evidence that God exists, as well as lack of evidence that God does not exist, it may just be that in the end... God does exist! But what God is... Certainly not a little moralist in the sky if you ask me. But that's just my opinion!
Well, feeling disappointed and wretched about all the injustice on this planet isn't going to make anybody any better. So my earlier response may have been a little premature. But hey, besides dancing, it may be a good idea to actually do something about the nasty aspects of life and, for example, donate some cash to Unicef or Warchild. That the world is full of misery does not mean we should all be miserable, that's for sure. Happy dancing!

I don't disagree with you at all neils, however those are all manifestations of human ignorance and greed. Unfortunately, that has been a hallmark of human history. After all, we are just very clever apes who have learned how to use language and tools. However, that doesn't diminish the existential reality that, as humans, we are this Cosmos become awake and looking back at itself. We get to enjoy this wondrous mystery only a few brief years. Please appreciate it. And please be kind . . .
Yes, however the fact that 80% of the world population is malnutrition-ed and has to work 100 hours a week for less then 10 dollars a month makes this awareness a little bitter sometimes. This advice: "please enjoy the dance", is not going to help much when given in Mozambique, to a 12 year old HIV positive child-hooker-former-child-soldier. So you see, I am a little skeptical of this hippie-new-age like talk that we are all made of stardust and nothing but dancing and enjoying is required.
That's why we like stuff that makes us dream... Let's take a toke, and all your cares go up in smoke!
Yeah, we have to cherish the pale blue dot... Booohooo! So it will look good when smashed by a big comet raising a 1000 foot wall of stone travelling outward at a speed of mach 7. Let's plant some more rainforest and take some acid! I I see flowers! I see birds! It's all... so ... beautiful!!! BOOOOHOOO!!!
it is a lie that has perpeuated and most humans are unwilling to puit god in the trash, where it belongs
but the concept of god has always been part of the human experience. In that respect, god exists.
the truth is that god never existed
my tear glands are dry
amazing speech...
We are the dreams that stuff is made of.
Sagan said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself." All the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago. Aren't we all just walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all? We are this wonder called life become AWAKE Please enjoy the dance. And ultimately there's nothing that separates us from others in this grand mystery. Please be kind.
Unfortunately, you need to truly understand chemistry, biology and physics to understand.
