Suzaku is a critical character. Rewatching this anime because it's so awesome, but trust me, Suzaku creates so many dramatic moments in the future... I personally don't like him (since I'm rooting for Lelouch) but the two are perfect foils for each other and there's some serious dramatic irony that stems from them, especially at the end of season 1.
